Big Media, Bad Idea

Big Media, Bad Idea

The Federal Communications Commission wants to change the rules to let Big Media get even bigger. They’re preparing to let giant media corporations control more local TV channels, radio stations and newspapers across America.

Americans lose when massive corporations like News Corp, Viacom and Time Warner seize control of their local media. These companies plan to combine local broadcasting with print, cable and telecommunications outlets to create conglomerates with unprecedented power over what we see, hear and read.

If allowed to proceed, such consolidation will determine who ultimately controls communications in America, which voices are heard — and which are silenced.

How Big Media affect you

What’s wrong with consolidation

What is going on in our government? Has no one ever heard of countries where ONLY big media or government control all the means of communication in that country and what it does to a democratic republic or a democracy?

Has Hitler, Stalin, and other dictators been so far removed from the current governmental bodies’ minds that they are unable to understand the ramifications of such a decision?

A democracy, or a democratic republic, thrives in large part due to the grassroots diversity of the flow of information. This is an important part of being free in our first amendment rights.

Amendment I – Freedom of Religion, Press, Expression. Ratified 12/15/1791:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Please make your voice known. Last time Michael Powell tried this in the FCC there was a big outcry of at least 3 million citizens. Now the new FCC leader is flexing his wings, with backing by Big Media.

Who owns the media?
And also see yesterday’s posting about Understanding HDCP for the tie in on the means of control.

Please, tell the FCC to Stop Big Media!

If we do not speak out, by the time all the hardware/OS/software level Digital Rights Management (from previous recent postings) and the Big Media stops (noted in this posting) are in place to control what we hear, see or say … will there truly be any democratic republic left?

If all this gets put in place to allow big media, the movie and music industry cartels and by extension the government, all working in cahoots with hardware technology vendors, to control everything we see, hear, and say, and buy … it will not be long till our children and grandchildren no longer live in the land of the free and home of the brave.

Great post, Bambi. The consolidation of media into the hands of a few is completely contrary to the priciples the Founding Fathers set down. What if the English Crown had owned Tom Paine’s printing press (maybe that’s the point)? Having recently watched the movie version of 1984 (w/John Hurt), I have some respect for the evil that can be perpetrated with centralized control of information.
    — “He who controls the past, controls the future. He who controls the present, controls the past.”
    — from George Orwell’s 1984

  2. Yes! So glad you thought to add that quote!

I also have a little more to say about this from a previous posting from March 29, 2005 entitled:

1984. Max Headroom. Brave New World. Time Machine. I Robot.

When I wrote it, I thought things would happen a little more slowly, that more people would realize what was happening, that it would be turned around at least for awhile … I am beginning to think that may not be possible.
