Crimes against nature?
March 18, 2011
I hadn’t really thought about what ‘Crimes against nature’ could mean. I guess I always thought it was along the lines of the some terrible man made disaster that would damage the health and well being of the terrarium we live in (planet earth), something that could hurt animals, people, water supplies…you know, things like blowing up ancient mountain tops for coal, the 2008 TVA Kingston coal ash slurry spill disaster that was supposed to mean revamped EPA Rules, Deepwater Horizon BP Oil spill, even nuclear accidents whether by negligence or natural disaster, and the aftermath of these types of things.

Hmm… very touchy subject, there Bambi. Discussion of the back story regarding laws, limitations, and prejudices against folks in similar situations to Eve, will inevitably lead to the fundamental religious tenets on which those archaic and bigoted laws are based. Discussions like that are notorious for ending badly. As a “live and let live” atheist/anarchist, I have seen it happen often.
That being said though, discussion, debate, dissemination of accurate information on topics such as this is the ONLY way that changes will ever come about.
So…
Thanks for taking a stance and posting this.
Thanks Eric. It is an important area to discuss, debate, and disseminate accurate information for sure.
And, of course, those who are wise enough to follow the links you provide in your article above will see that you utilized and excellent writing technique to actually spur discussion in two important topic areas simultaneously.
I’d like to comment about the first one for the moment. Crimes against nature being the destruction of our living environment (the Earth) brings to mind the current event taking place at the Fukushima nuclear facility in Japan. It also reminds one of a similar event that occurred back in ’86 — Chernobyl, the worst man-made disaster in known history.
The cynic in me wonders what the Japanese authorities (and probably also the world’s pro-nuke pundits and profiteers) are NOT telling us about this current event in Japan. Hindsight has showed us the the Soviet Union was not very forthcoming with the facts about Chernobyl either; to the detriment of much of Europe’s inhabitants.
Don’t think that the current revised history of Chernobyl, which states that only two or three thousand folks were directly affected by that disaster, is at all accurate. Watch this movie and see what really happened… and is still happening:

What’s the real story of Fukushima going to be in 20 years?
Now, about Eve’s troubles in Louisianna…
As stated, I’m a “live and let live” person. I don’t believe any individual, government entity, or religious authority has the right to dictate to any consenting adults whom they may or may not love or with whom the may or may not have consenting (adult + adult) relationships. That is a very personal choice and a right. Infringement of that right is tantamount to bigotry.
The human race needs to get past its genetic predisposition to categorize fellow humans in an “us and them” way. This was a survival mechanism when tribes were living in caves and trees 100,000 years ago. We should have evolved past that stage by now. Religion has been first and foremost in the perpetuation of that characteristic of our behavior.
People need to mind their own business and stop worrying about what their neighbors are doing behind their closed bedroom doors. People need to mind their own beliefs regarding gods, worship, etc… and KEEP THEM TO THEMSELVES. People all over the world need to accept that we are all different… yet the same; and celebrate those differences, rather than isolate them.
There. I’ve said it. Now what am hell am I going to write about in my own blogs tonight?
Oh, and take a moment to visit my friend Psicop’s excellent blog, particularly this recent article –> http://www.agnostic-library.com/ma/2011/03/17/students-order-non-christians-to-leave-giles-county/
G’night…
Great piece Eric! Thank you for expounding on these very personal and deep subjects that can become so polarizing. You stated so much of what is important in both. Thanks!
