Cast your vote, I did.
I hope you have already or are planning to cast your vote, I did. I went out with a bad case of bronchitis, in the rain, to vote today.
Couple thoughts. The little town where we live did a nice job of verifying voters, and there weren’t too many people waiting when I went around 11AM to vote. Thankfully since it was rainy (and they could only have a few folks in the room at a time), and I was sick. Which is why I went out early to vote.
However, I did ask about a hard copy audit trail on the votes, and they said that they can’t see the vote (I guess in case I was concerned that others could see my vote). Nice thought. But I said I was more concerned about having a hard copy audit trail on the vote. They assured me that the machine keeps a tally. I said I don’t trust machines.
I feel good about casting my vote. But I am concerned that if our town didn’t have a hard copy audit trail, how many more towns in rural America didn’t have a hard copy audit trail?
I thought this was all taken care of over the last couple years. It’s been something of concern since the 2000 election. When they talk about the cogs in government, I see what they mean. This is ludicrous.
Sigh…
EDIT: I did call into 1-866-OUR-VOTE to let them know about no paper audit trail in our small town, and have been watching the voting issues over at OurVoteLive.org.
